With the early style (short stiff vanes) impeller t does need to be replaced at an interval no greater than 2 years, but annual is best. Usually by the time you get the drive pulled apart and the impeller housing off, what with using new base plate gaskets anyway, you might as well replace it anyway. Peace of mind and cheap insurance.

Yes, Alpha One impellers need to be changed every other year, at least. But the Gen II impeller is a long vane or 'floppy' impeller and has a considerably longer life.

Re: Volvo 8.1 Water Pump Impeller Change On some model 8.1 Volvo Penta sea pumps mounted to the front of the engine and turned by the crankshaft via harmonic balancer and main pulley the housing can "wobble" free and suck air from behind the pump, a difficult symptom to diagnose if you don't know where to look. Re: Bravo 1 impeller FWIW - The sea water impeller is worth checking every 50 engine hours and replacing at 100 hour intervals (unless it looks really good). I added a sea water strainer to the intake hose that leads to the raw water pump. Before you crank the motor to check out the water pump ensure you have the water on for about a minute before you crank her over on the muffs to ensure water gets into the water pump. Re: Correct rotation for impeller The impellor rotates in and offset housing. On one side the fins get almost 100% straight and on the other side they get bend considerably. The bending action makes the space between the fins smaller forcing the water out into the cooling system of the motor.
