Surface Drive Outboard - LifeStyle

Two duck hunting groups addressed the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission on Wednesday to talk about overcrowding at WMAs and surface-drive outboard motors. Surface-drive motors are air-cooled engines ... With enough HP these MV hulls can jump up out of that hole and go just fine with a heavy load, say a 40-60+ hp outboard, but you can't get a 40-60hp stock surface drive and even the modded motors pushing a true 35-50hp at the prop only marginally compensate for this issue.

I'm getting a boat in a year or less and can't decide on an outboard or surface drive. I will mostly be hunting open water but the main lake I hunt gets... As for size i would order a stock surface drive prop for a 15hp surface drive ( 10X8 ) honestly if you have to ask how to get the prop on making a surface drive outboard is going to be a huge task. Like many others, I have a need to go through some skinny water.

Surface Drive Outboard, Whether ridding creeks or trying to get into my favorite duck spot, my 40hp outboard isn't always up for the task. The large surface drive engines are great but are very heavy and cost ALOT. The Copperhead engines are great but... I assume a surface drive pushes more like an outboard in the sense that it pushes more from the bottom than the top like the long tail. What kinds of problems are cause by the chain setup?

Surface Drive Outboard, Been looking at a 17 or 18 foot weldbilt or lowe roughneck with an outboard but it's seeming that with each year more spots will require a MM or surface drive. Makes it tough to decide, especially when spending $8-15k. I am in the process of building a small surface drive mud motor for my 1232 jon boat. It will be replacing an air cooled 5hp outboard that weighs about... A surface drive would be even worse. Bottom line, get the biggest mud motor you can afford.

Know the pros and cons of SD vs LT. Accept the loss of speed and load carrying ability compared to a smaller outboard, and don't be surprised if you have transom issues down the road. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I've been researching, as many of us, and decided to build my own surface drive. I'm using a 16hp clone.
